An investigation by the British police has revealed that all 39 people found dead in the back of a semi-truck in the U.K. on Wednesday were Chinese nationals.
“We have since confirmed that eight of the deceased are women and 31 are men and all are believed to be Chinese nationals,” Essex Police wrote in a statement.
The cause of death has not yet been established.
The 23-year-old Northern Irish truck driver, Morris Robinson, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder after the discovery. The truck originated from Northern Ireland and was found Wednesday at an industrial park in Grays, Essex, outside of London. Authorities are currently attempting to establish the chain of events that led to the deaths.
Members of Parliament speculated in the House of Commons that the deaths may be related to human trafficking, although police have not backed up these claims.
