An off-duty police officer is being hailed as a hero after he managed to pull a woman from a wrecked vehicle moments before it exploded.

Russ Wise, an officer with the Alameda, California, police department, was traveling with his wife when they witnessed a head-on collision between two vehicles. Wise noticed one vehicle involved in the wreck was leaking fluid and the driver was stuck and could not get out.

Wise managed to pull her to safety moments before the vehicle exploded into flames.

In a Facebook post reporting the incident, the Alameda police department told Wise, “You are a credit to us all.”
