A new survey by Pew Research Center found over half of its respondents who identify as "Christian" say sex outside of marriage is either "always" or "sometimes" or acceptable.

Only 32% of the Christian respondents said it is "never" okay for "unmarried adults in a committed relationship" to have sex. And only 33% of the Christians in the survey said casual sex is "never" okay.
  • 50% of the Christians who took the poll said "casual sex between consenting adults who are not in a committed relationship" is "always" or "sometimes" permissible.
  • 62% of the Roman Catholic respondents said casual sex is "always" or "sometimes" okay
  • 54% percent of the mainline Protestants in the survey said casual sex is okay.
  • Evangelical Protestants had the lowest percentage (32%) among all the denominational groups in answering if they think casual sex acceptable.

The vast majority (84%) of the "unaffiliated" respondents think "casual sex" is okay. The survey categorizes "those who describe themselves religiously as atheist, agnostic or as "nothing in particular.'"
