After he slapped twice at the hand of a woman who grabbed him in a crowded St. Peter's Square on New Year's Eve, Pope Francis issued a public apology for his actions.
"I apologize for the bad example given yesterday," the pope said Wednesday, saying that he also loses patience sometimes.
In a widely circulated video, the woman is seen grabbing the pope's hand and pulling him toward her. She refused to let go, even when the elderly pope grew visibly frustrated and tried to free his hand. The pope then slapped twice at her hand before getting his hand free.
