Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler sent a letter to President Trump on Friday, which he then posted to Twitter, declining the president's offer to send federal assistance to help quell months-long unrest in the city.

In the letter, Wheeler blasted Trump's offer as a "cynical attempt to stoke fear and distract us from the real work of our city," saying, "There is no room here for racist violence or those who wish to bring their ideology of hate into our community."

Wheeler concluded the letter with "Stay away, please."

President Trump replied late Friday:

If the incompetent Mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler, doesn't get control of his city and stop the Anarchists, Agitators, Rioters and Looters, causing great danger to innocent people, we will go in and take care of matters the way they should have been taken care of 100 days ago!
