Progressive “Squad” lawmaker celebrates former Communist Party member

Progressive "Squad" lawmaker Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) celebrated Angela Davis on Tuesday as she introduced Davis during a virtual speaking event hosted by Health Law Advocates.

The annual event is a primary source of corporate and individual gifts for Health Law Advocates.

Davis is a civil rights activist who has worked with the Communist Party USA and the Black Panther Party. While sh was teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles, before then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan tried to fire due to her ties to the Communist Party; however, students and faculty came to her defense.

Davis has also been charged with murder, kidnapping, and criminal conspiracy charges after being linked to the purchase of weapons that were used by three inmates who took a judge and juror hostage. Officials responded with gunfire, killing the inmates and the judge. Davis was put on the FBI list after being accused of providing the weapons until she was captured in 1972. She then spent 16 months in prison before she was acquitted of all charges.

🔦 Davis, who defended Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) against attacks from President Trump, is considered a symbol for many activist movements, such as black liberation, anti-capitalism and feminism.
