Racism at Smith College: Whistleblower reveals institution’s psychological abuse of white employees

A bombshell whistleblower report stands poised to blow the lid off of an institutionalized policy of racial hostility towards white employees at Smith College in Massachusetts.

On Friday afternoon, Jodi Shaw, a former residential life coordinator at the college, submitted her resignation letter to President Kathleen McCartney. Shaw describes a "physically and mentally" debilitating, hostile racial environment at the school that has forced her to sacrifice her financial stability for her emotional well-being.

Shaw reported multiple examples of racial animus directed towards her as a divorced white mother that seemed to be pulled directly from the "anti-racism" ideology that has become dogmatic at many public universities in the country.

"I endured meetings in which another staff member violently banged his fist on the table, chanting ‘Rich, white women! Rich, white women!' in reference to Smith alumnae," she wrote. "I listened to my supervisor openly name preferred racial quotas for job openings in our department. I was given supplemental literature in which the world's population was reduced to two categories — ‘dominant group members' and ‘subordinated group members' — based solely on characteristics like race."

Shaw said in January of last year she attended a retreat "focused on racial issues" with her colleagues. During the retreat, Shaw was put on the spot to talk about her own race and politely declined, saying the entire discussion made her uncomfortable.

"Later, the facilitators told everyone present that a white person's discomfort at discussing their race is a symptom of ‘white fragility.' They said that the white person may seem like they are in distress, but that it is actually a ‘power play.' In other words, because I am white, my genuine discomfort was framed as an act of aggression. I was shamed and humiliated in front of all of my colleagues."

Shaw expressed in her resignation letter that any complaint she raised about the ongoing animus was met with further retaliation, all of which was ignored by a progressive administration appeasing a new woke cultural orthodoxy.

"What passes for ‘progressive' today at Smith and at so many other institutions is regressive. It taps into humanity's worst instincts to break down into warring factions, and I fear this is rapidly leading us to a very twisted place. It terrifies me that others don't seem to see that racial segregation and demonization are wrong and dangerous no matter what its victims look like. Being told that any disagreement or feelings of discomfort somehow upholds ‘white supremacy' is not just morally wrong. It is psychologically abusive."

It was that illiberal, neo-racism that Smith had blown the whistle on months before her resignation in an October 2020 YouTube video directed at Smith's administration.

"I ask that Smith College stop reducing my personhood to a racial category. Stop telling me what I must think and feel about myself," she said at the time. "Stop presuming to know who I am or what my culture is based upon my skin color. Stop asking me to project stereotypes and assumptions onto others based on their skin color."

When her petitions were slighted and met with retribution, resignation became her last resort. Shaw seemed to express her awareness that writing a resignation letter of this nature would likely preclude her future employment both at Smith and elsewhere.

But, she said, "My children's future, and indeed, our collective future as a free nation, depends on people having the courage to stand up to this dangerous and divisive ideology, no matter the cost."
