A torrential rainfall across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory has extinguished around one-third of active bushfires in a single day.
The rainfall put out 20 active fires in the largest single-day drop in wildfires since the season began. There are still 42 fires active on the coast. The rain also caused some flooding.
As a result of the rain, Sydney saw it wettest day on record in around 15 months.
"It was fantastic to wake up to much-needed rain this morning!" said Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore on Twitter. "Today has already been the wettest Sydney day in 15 months, and thankfully it's raining across NSW where we need it most."
