Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) called the publication of her lewd photos and the following ethics investigation the “dirtiest gutter politics I’ve ever seen” in a farewell speech on the House floor Thursday.
Hill announced her resignation on Sunday after it was discovered that she allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer and nude photos of her were published online. An ethics investigation had also been opened.
“I am leaving now because of a double standard. I am leaving because I no longer want to be used as a bargaining chip,” Hill said in her resignation speech to the House. “I’m leaving because I didn’t want to be peddled by papers and blogs and websites used by shameless operatives for the dirtiest gutter politics I’ve ever seen, and the right-wing media to drive clicks and expand their audience by distributing intimate photographs of me taken without my knowledge — let alone my consent — for the sexual entertainment of millions.”
Hill also criticized the “misogynistic culture that gleefully consumed my naked pictures, capitalized on my sexuality, and enabled my abusive ex to continue that abuse, this time with the entire country watching.”
A spokesperson from the victim’s right law firm C.A. Goldberg, PLLC, confirmed that they represent Hill and she is seeking legal action for the leaked photos.
Hill resigned after casting a vote in favor of formalizing the impeachment proceedings.
