U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) acknowledged Tuesday that he is under federal investigation for alleged sexual impropriety with a 17-year-old. The 38-year-old Congressman believes that people at the Department of Justice are attempting to make his personal sexual behavior from his single days a criminal matter in order to destroy him.
"The allegations against me are as searing as they are false," Gaetz said. "I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know when I was a single guy."
Gaetz told reporters from Axios that his family has been dealing with an extortion effort by someone wanting $25 million from them, and he believes the current investigation is tied to that effort. The congressman provided screenshots, emails and other information documenting the extortion attempt.
Gaetz, who says he has never had a relationship with an underage girl, also told reporters that he is considering leaving Congress to take a job at Newsmax.
