Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) allegedly sought to include a provision in the coronavirus economic stimulus bill that would have directed funding to abortion clinics in violation of federal law, according to The Daily Caller.

"Multiple senior White House officials" claimed that Pelosi, as part of negotiations over the bill, attempted to lobby for "a mandate for up to $1 billion to reimburse laboratory claims" that White House sources said would "set a precedent of health spending without protections outlined in the Hyde Amendment."

One White House official said:

"Under the guise of protecting people, Speaker Pelosi is working to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent covering abortion — which is not only backwards, but goes against historical norms."

The Hyde Amendment forbids federal money being spent on abortion services outside of some narrow exceptions, such as abortions necessary to save a mother's life. The provision has commanded bipartisan support over the years, though the Democratic platform in 2016 explicitly called for its repeal.

Pelosi on Thursday slammed Republican unwillingness to move forward with the stimulus, claiming that Republican representatives "don't want to agree to language" in the bill.
