A second arrest has been made in the murder of 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant.
Hinnant was a North Carolina boy who was shot to death by his neighbor, 25-year-old Darrius Sessoms, while Hinnant was riding his bicycle near his 7- and 8-year-old sisters.
Following the murder, Sessoms fled the scene and was assisted by Aolani Takemi Marie Pettit in his efforts to evade the police. On Tuesday, police arrested Pettit and charged her with felony after the fact.
Hinnant's mother, Bonny Waddell, said they "lost a big piece of our family."
"My baby didn't deserve this," she said. "He had the biggest smile, the biggest eyes. … He changed all of our lives. He touched everybody that he knew."
His grandmother, Gwen Hinnant, said the family is "leaning on each other right now."
"Obviously, we do have faith, and that is part of what is helpful," she said. "We do believe there's a higher power, and there's a reason for everything. We just don't understand what that reason is."
