The Senate voted 55-45 on Thursday in support of a war powers resolution that would hinder President Trump's abilities to engage in military action in Iran without the approval of Congress.

Eight Republican senators — Mike Lee (R-UT), Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Todd Young (R-IN), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Susan Collins (R-ME) — joined the Democrats in voting for the resolution.

The resolution can be voted on by the House and ultimately vetoed by the president. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that Trump would likely veto the resolution, but added that it "sends a shot across his bow that the majority of the Senate and the majority of the House do not want the president waging war without congressional approval."
