Billionaire left-wing philanthropist George Soros has called for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg to be removed from their positions, accusing Zuckerberg of supporting President Trump by allowing political ads.
In a letter to the Financial Times, Soros accused Zuckerberg of engaging in "some kind of mutual assistance arrangement with Donald Trump that will help him to get re-elected" by allowing political ads on Facebook.
Facebook allows political ads, exempting them from fact-checking policies and allowing politicans to target certain demographics. It currently records all ads in the Ad Library, showing how much money politicians are spending on Facebook ads and which messages they are paying to promote.
Soros encouraged the company to ban political ads ahead of the U.S. election.
"If there is any doubt whether an ad is political, it should err on the side of caution and refuse to publish," he wrote. "It is unlikely that Facebook will follow this course."
🔦 Twitter has banned all political ads worldwide since October.
