At least 28 people have died and more than 100 people were injured in a stampede at a Lag Ba'omer bonfire festival in northern Israel.
"It happened in a split second; people just fell, trampling each other. It was a disaster," said a witness.
The annual festivities at the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, which was the largest event in Israel since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, brought tens of thousands of Hassidic Jews together on Thursday night at Mount Meron. According to event organizers, an estimated 100,000 people were in attendance, with another 100,000 expected to arrive by Friday morning.
Footage that was captured from the festival shows a massive crowd of attendees dancing to live music prior to the stampede that occurred after a platform collapsed.
