The State Department issued a warning early on Friday urging U.S. citizens in Iraq to leave the country immediately, due to rising tensions in the region.

The warning comes just hours after Iran promised "severe revenge" for a U.S. airstrike at the Baghdad International Airport that killed top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

American citizens should also not approach the U.S. embassy, as all consular operations are currently suspended, according to the State Department.
