A Christopher Columbus statue in Boston's North End was beheaded early Wednesday morning, local news reported.

Photos taken at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park show the decapitated head of the monument lying next to its base, surrounded by crime scene tape and scattered shards of marble.

The act of vandalism comes just hours after rioters in Virginia pulled down a Columbus statue, set it on fire, and threw it into a nearby lake. The base of the statue was also spray painted and a cardboard sign was left on top that read "Columbus represents genocide."

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said the statue will be placed into storage to "assess the damage" and that conversations will take place on whether to return the statue to the park.

? The overnight incident was not the first time the statue had been defaced. In 2015, the statue was covered in red paint with the words "Black Lives Matter" written on the base. The head was also cut off in 2006.
