The Supreme Court of the United States has ordered a temporary stay on a lower court’s decision to release the tax returns of Donald Trump, Chief Justice John Roberts announced Monday:
A subpoena previously issued by the House Oversight and Reform Committee will be unenforceable during the term of the stay. The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals had previously ruled that the committee could proceed with the legally binding mandate.
Prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the committee had actually agreed to a 10-day stay on its subpoena to give Trump more time to comply with the order.
Democrats have been demanding the release of Trump’s returns since before he was elected. Presidents and presidential candidates have traditionally released some or all of their returns for public perusal.
