A suspect has been arrested in connection with the Monday cartel massacre of nine American Mormon women and children in Mexico.

The Agency for Criminal Investigation in the state of Sonora said in a statement Tuesday that the suspect was apprehended in the town of Agua Prieta, near the Arizona border. The person was found with an arsenal of weapons, a bulletproof SUV, and two bound and gagged hostages.

“A person was arrested in possession of two .223 long guns, a .308 long gun, ten .223 caliber magazines, a .308 full magazine and a 50-caliber Barrett long rifle,” the agency’s statement said. “We are investigating the possibility that the person who was arrested had participated in these terrible events.”

Officials have said that the gunmen may have mistaken the group’s large SUVs for those of a rival gang amid a vicious turf war
