The Swedish government has dropped an investigation into an alleged rape by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, saying that the evidence against him has “weakened.”

Assange was accused of rape nine years ago in Sweden. Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson said that too much time had elapsed between the accusations and the current investigation to allow a successful prosecution.

Persson nevertheless said she found Assange’s accuser’s testimony “credible and reliable” and that her account of the assault was “coherent, extensive and detailed.”
