Two American University professors will be released in exchange for three Taliban prisoners in Afghanistan.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said the prisoner exchange will include professors Kevin King and Timothy Weeks, an American citizen and Australian citizen, respectively. Both were kidnapped at gunpoint in 2016 at the Afghanistan campus of American University.

Ghani also said that Taliban commanders Anas Haqqani, Haji Maali Khan, and Hafiz Rasheed Ahamd Omari are set to be released.

The Afghanistan campus of American University released a statement on the releases.

“[American University] is encouraged to hear reports of the possible release of our two colleagues, Kevin King and Timothy Weeks. While AUAF is not part of these discussions, we continue to urge the immediate and safe return of our faculty members who have been held in captivity, away from their friends and families, for more than three years.”
