At least 20 congregants have been killed and another 16 injured in a stampede during a Sunday church service in northern Tanzania, according to local officials.
Pastor Boniface Mwamposa convinced scores of people to attend a Sunday service at a sports stadium in Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, by promising them great prosperity and cures for diseases if they stepped in "blessed oil."
During one point in the service, Mwamposa told approximately 10,000 worshipers to rush to one side of the stadium in order to be anointed, inciting a stampede that killed 20 people, five of whom were children.
Mwamposa was arrested on Sunday as he was trying to flee the country.
"He will be held accountable for causing this tragedy," said Home Affairs Minister George Simbachawene.
