A dog named August in Oakland, Tennessee, has become the oldest living golden retriever in history after celebrating her 20th birthday in April, according to GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue.

The dog's owners, Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt, said "Augie" was rehomed twice before they adopted her at 14 years old.

"They figured that most people wouldn't want such an elderly golden, but they had no idea of the upcoming journey they would be on with Augie," the rescue group wrote. "Jennifer and Steve have been rewarded with over six years of love and loyalty from this wonderful (and now record-holding) golden."

The average life expectancy of most golden retrievers is 10-12 years.

The rescue group shared pictures of Augie's big day, celebrated with a safe-for-dogs carrot cake and her siblings, Sherman, Belle, and Bruce.

Despite Augie's age, her owner said she is still "surprisingly healthy" and can move around well. She enjoys daily walks around the yard.
