A new animated series is coming from the minds of VeggieTales co-creator Mike Nawrocki, Disney animator Tom Bancroft, and producer Steve Taylor, designed to help kids "make a connection to the Bible and life of Jesus."

The "Dead Sea Squirrels" will become reality courtesy of a team of investors who have stepped up to fund the entire project.

Nawrocki, who was the voice of VeggieTales character Larry the Cucumber, wrote a book series about the zany squirrels. Those books will provide the basis of the first six episodes of the new animated series.

"It's been a longtime dream of mine to bring this series to life," Nawrocki said. "What started as a title based on a ‘cheesy' pun has developed into a fun-filled world kids will love while giving parents an entertaining resource to pass on biblical values and life lessons."

The series tells the story of two 1st-century squirrels from Israel that managed to be preserved in salt alongside the Dead Sea. A 10-year-old boy named Michael discovers them 2,000 years later and sneaks them home in his backpack. From there, Merle and Pearl, lead Michael and his friends through character-building, humorous adventures.

Bancroft, who is joining Nawrocki for the project, is well-known for his animation work on Disney classics, "Mulan," "The Lion King," and "Beauty and the Beast."
