Thousands, and perhaps tens of thousands, of pro-Second Amendment activists have descended on Virginia's Capitol to protest the newly elected Democrat leadership's plans to pass sweeping gun-control legislation in the state.

Many participants are dressed in camouflage and many are also openly and legally carrying firearms, including AR-style rifles, outside the gun-free Capitol Square.

President Trump took to social media to blast Democrats with a pair of tweets, saying, "They will take your guns away," and "Don't let it happen, VOTE REPUBLICAN IN 2020!"

Media have been warning since the protest was announced that officials fear violence may occur during the demonstration. Governor Northam has said authorities have seen "credible and serious threats" of "violence, armed confrontation, and assault on our Capitol (from) groups with action plans," including out-of-state militias and hate groups.
