The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics have been postponed, officials announced on Monday, with the global sporting event being put on hold due to fears that the coronavirus pandemic will disrupt the event and endanger those who attend it.

Dick Pound, a member of the International Olympics Committee, said on Monday that "the Games are not going to start on July 24," the originally scheduled opening date. As late as March 17, Japanese Olympic minister Seiko Hashimoto had said the games would proceed as planned.

The Olympics join numerous other sporting leagues and events, including virtually every major American league and the Union of European Football Associations, in suspending or postponing games and seasons over concern of spreading the coronavirus.
