Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau assigned partial blame to the United States on Tuesday for the Iranian government shooting down a commercial airliner in Iran, killing all 176 people on board.
"If there were no tensions, if there was no escalation recently in the region, those Canadians would be right now home with their families," Trudeau said, referencing the dozens of Canadians who died in the attack.
The United States recently carried out the successful killing of Qassem Soleimani, an elite Iranian general who had overseen years of fatal attacks against U.S. servicemembers.
Trudeau had previously said that Iran "must take full responsibility" for the crash. The Iranian president has blamed the mass killing on "human error."
