A surprise Sunday evening statement from the Trump campaign announced that prominent attorney Sidney Powell was "not a member of the Trump Legal Team." The statement was authored by Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis.
The announcement comes just days after Powell appeared and played a prominent role in a Trump legal team press conference.
President Trump had previously declared the former federal prosecutor a central figure of his legal effort, tweeting that it was a "truly great team."
In response to the campaign distancing itself from her, Powell issued the following statement to CBS News:
"I understand today's press release," Powell wrote. "I will continue to represent #WeThePeople who had their votes for Trump and other Republicans stolen by massive fraud through Dominion and Smartmatic, and we will be filing suit soon. The chips will fall where they may, and we will defend the foundations of this great Republic. #KrakenOnSteroids"
Powell's rhetoric, including claims that Trump "won by a landslide" and that she would be bringing a lawsuit of "biblical proportions," has led to increasing misgivings on the part of key Republican figures.
Former RNC political director Mike DuHaime has called for the party to delete its tweeted endorsement of Powell's claims over voter fraud.
