President Trump inserted himself in a contentious armed forces affair on Thursday, declaring that a Navy officer embroiled in scandal would not be stripped of his position in the elite SEALs unit.
The officer, Edward Gallagher, was convicted in July of posing with the corpse of an enemy combatant. Gallagher had been cleared of numerous other serious charges, including murder. The Navy had scheduled a hearing to determine whether or not he would be stripped of his Trident pin, which would have effectively kicked him out of the Navy SEALs.
In a tweet on Thursday morning, Trump seemed to announce that the hearing would not go forward and that Gallagher would retain his position in the SEALs.
"The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher's Trident Pin," Trump tweeted. "This case was handled very badly from the beginning. Get back to business!"
