President Trump has been considering abstaining from the general election debates in 2020, two people close to the situation told The New York Times.
Trump allegedly does not trust the Commission on Presidential Debates, the organization which puts on the debates, and is specifically worried about who will moderate the debates.
The president consistently complained that he was put at a disadvantage during the 2016 campaign during debates with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Clinton saw an increase in the poll after each of the three debates.
"Not doing any would not be strategically smart," said Philippe Reines, a longtime Clinton adviser. Reines said that he think Trump is bluffing so that he only has to participate in one debate.
