The Trump administration on Wednesday approved restoring federal funding to a Texas family-planning program after former President Barack Obama pulled funding in 2013 because the program excluded abortion providers.
After Texas refused to distribute Title X funding to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers in 2011, the Obama administration decided to allocate those same funds to the Women's Health and Family Planning Association of Texas. The funds were then used to support clinics within the state, including Planned Parenthood.
The Department of Health and Human Services has decided to return the federal funds back to the state of Texas to be used at its discretion, even if it excludes abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he is pleased with the administration's decision to restore federal funding.
"The Lone Star State is once again in partnership with the federal government to provide meaningful family planning and health services while fostering a culture of life," he said.
