Fueling speculation that he is planning to release his longtime political adviser Roger Stone from legal punishment, President Trump on Saturday retweeted an article about a petition calling for Stone to be pardoned.

The tweet, originally composed by a user named Lori Hendry, claimed that more than 100,000 people have signed the petition to release Stone before he reports for his 40-month prison sentence for witness-tampering and lying to Congress during the Russian collusion investigation.

Trump has previously declared his former adviser the victim of a "witch hunt."

Stone is currently under home confinement and is scheduled to surrender to authorities and begin serving his sentence on July 14.
