Reacting to the massacre of at least nine American Mormons, including six children, in the Mexican border state of Sonora, President Trump took to Twitter Monday to call for Mexico and the U.S. to “wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth”:

The president also tweeted:

If Mexico needs or requests help in cleaning out these monsters, the United States stands ready, willing & able to get involved and do the job quickly and effectively. The great new President of Mexico has made this a big issue, but the cartels have become so large and powerful that you sometimes need an army to defeat an army!

🔦 The brutal massacre of Mormon women and children is just the latest in a recent surge of violence that has erupted in cartel-dominated Mexico — a remarkable stretch even for a country that consistently sets new murder records. Less than a month ago the Sinaloa cartel effectively captured the city of Culiacán in a military-style takeover after the son of infamous drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was captured by authorities.
