President Trump's lawyers urged the U.S. Senate on Monday to reject the impeachment case brought before it by House Democrats, claiming that the charges were "flimsy" and that the president did "absolutely nothing wrong."
The legal team filed the brief on Monday, just days before the trial is expected to start. The attorneys argued that Democrats sought to "corrupt the extraordinary power of impeachment" in order to overturn the results of the 2016 election.
Democrats have claimed that Trump abused his powers in office by reportedly withholding Ukrainian foreign aid pursuant to an investigation of the family of former vice president Joe Biden by that country. Trump's lawyers countered that even if that were the case, it would not rise to the level of an impeachable offense, as Trump did not violate any laws by doing so.
