U.S. unemployment rate hits 50-year low

The U.S. economy added 136,000 new jobs in September, the government said Friday, and unemployment hit a five-decade low.

This is the slowest pace of jobs in four months, and economists expected a 150,000 increase.

The unemployment rate dropped to 3.5%, the lowest rate since December 1969. The number of unemployed people fell by 275,00 over the month.

The unemployment rate for African American men fell to 5.4 percent — the lowest level since 1973.

Employment gains for August and July revised up by a combined 45,000
