The United States Navy is working toward prohibiting display of the Confederate flag "from all public spaces and work areas" aboard Navy vessels and bases, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the service.

"The order is meant to ensure unit cohesion, preserve good order and discipline," Admiral Mike Gilday, chief of the naval operations, said in the statement, "and uphold the Navy's core values of honor, courage, and commitment."

The Marine Corps has announced a similar ban, and Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy has expressed willingness to discuss renaming bases named in honor of Confederate leaders.
