Attempting to spare the household pets from their fates in “kill shelters,” the Humane Society of Utah is trying to find homes for 400 cats in just four weeks.
The organization began its mercy campaign on October 20, sending out a blitz of social media announcements and advertising adoptable cats with humorous biographies. The shelter is waiving all adoption fees for cats between now and November 16.
A spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Utah said that shelters in the state are overwhelmed with cats, in large part due to out-of-control breeding by unspayed and unneutered cats. Kittens in particular are at significant risk for being euthanized, due to the higher levels of care they require.
