Protesters attempting to topple a statue of Christopher Columbus at Chicago's Grant Park on Friday night were thwarted by a handful of police officers, at whom they launched fireworks and hurled bottles, cans, and other projectiles.
The rioters, of whom there were reportedly at least 1,000, used ropes in an attempt to bring down the statue that has stood in the park since 1933.
As they hurled projectiles at the police, they screamed in unison, "Who do you serve? Who do you protect?"
A number of officers were injured during the melee and some needed to be taken to the hospital for treatment, according to Chicago police spokesman Thomas Ahern.
