A video posted to Twitter on Saturday shows that the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone has established a segregated space for black members.
The video shows a line of multiple white protesters, two of whom are holding a sign that proclaims "Black Out." The cameraman asks if he is permitted to cross into the roped-off region, given that he is half-Italian and half-Columbian.
"Well this space is just right now held for black people," one protester said.
When he questions if that means only "full black," he is told, "if you have black ancestry" or "if you have experienced oppression because you are black, then you can enter this space."
🔦 Segregation was a common practice in the Jim Crow era, codified by the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision which instituted the infamous "separate but equal doctrine," which was later overturned as unconstitutional.
