Vigilante lock picker opens parks across Paris at night

A vigilante lock picker known only by the name "Jose" has been unlocking parks across Paris, France, and reopening them to the public in the middle of the night.

Although parks have been reopened in France's "green zones" — regions where the infection rate is low — parks in the "red zone," such as Paris, are still closed due to restrictive lockdown measures.

The parks which Jose targets are mostly located in Paris' lower-income neighborhoods.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, along with 24 other mayors of nearby suburbs, have been pleading with the government to reopen its parks and green spaces. The government has yet to comply with their requests.

Nevertheless, residents have been appreciative of Jose's efforts. Two posters hanging from the railings of the Parc de Belleville say, "Thank you, Jose!" the local newspaper said.

Jose could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $82,000 if caught.
