The Washington Post received sharp pushback Sunday after publishing a headline about the death of ISIS founder and leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi which described him as an “austere religious scholar.”

The headline read: “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State, dies at 48.”

Social media users savaged the news outlet for the take:

WaPo has since changed the headline of the story to “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, extremist leader of Islamic State, dies at 48.”

Washington Post Vice President of Communications Kristine Coratti Kelly said to Fox News, “Regarding our al-Baghdadi obituary, the headline should never have read that way and we changed it quickly.”
