Storm chasing can be an exhilarating experience, but it's also extremely dangerous, as a group of chasers found out Saturday evening in Happy, Texas.
Multiple reports of tornado touchdowns happened throughout the countryside near Happy, sending the storm chasing teams from SVL Media LLC out into the field. After documenting a "cone tornado" near Palo Duro, the team got caught from behind in what is called an anticyclonic satellite tornado.
"Anticyclonic" refers to the manner in which the tornado forms, which is different than a standard cone or wedge tornado, while "satellite" means that it is either a spin-off from the major twister or it revolves around it, explaining why the storm team was caught off guard.
Though the vehicles sustained significant damage, all the team members survived the experience with only cuts and bruises.
