Vacationers at Cocoa Beach got an up-close view of a vintage World War II-era plane that crash landed in the shallow waters just feet away from them Saturday. The plane, participating in a nearby Florida air show, experienced mechanical failure, prompting the pilot to ditch in the ocean.
The TBM Avenger aircraft was participating in the warbird parade of the Cocoa Beach Air Show when the mechanical failure occurred. Once the plane was down, several beachgoers immediately took off swimming towards the wreck to try to aid the pilot, who was flying solo.
Emergency crews were not far behind. The pilot is expected to fully recover and there were no other injuries reported.
