Atheist watchdog group Freedom From Religion Foundation has filed an ethics complaint against the judge that gave her personal Bible to former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger after sentencing her to ten years for killing a man in his own apartment.
The group sent a letter to the State Commission on Judicial Conduct in Texas, saying that State District Judge Tammy Kemp’s “proselytizing actions overstepped judicial authority, were inappropriate, and were unconstitutional.”
Kemp sentenced Amber Guyger, 31, to ten years in prison for fatally shooting Botham Jean, 26, in his own apartment after mistaking it for her own.
The sentencing went viral after a video showed Jean’s brother hugging Guyger after forgiving her and encouraging her to become a Christian. Kemp then came down from the stand, also hugged her, gave Guyger her Bible, and pointed out John 3:16.
