The White House plans to charge the press $170 to take a COVID-19 test every time they enter the grounds, starting Monday.
The cost of maintaining a daily testing regime for nearly a year has strained the White House's budget, the Washington Post reports, adding that the new administration wants to "shift the burden onto news organizations."
The policy sparked reaction from various members of the media.
Tim Murtaugh, the former communications director for President Donald Trump's 2020 campaign commented on the policy. Murtaugh pointed out the daily charge for the virus test would cost $850 per week, $3,400 per month, and $40,800 for one reporter to the visit White House on a daily basis.
"That's a lot for the privilege of covering Biden," Murtaugh said. "Only bigger outlets could swing it."
