A 27-year-old woman has been sentenced to a decade in prison after abusing her unborn infant, having used drugs so frequently during her pregnancy that her newborn child had to be treated for withdrawal symptoms.
Chelsea Thompson gave birth in 2018, after which she was arrested when it was apparent her baby was undergoing drug withdrawal. She confessed to authorities that she had used meth, pills, and heroin throughout her pregnancy. She told police that she had not even sought prenatal care for her child.
Thompson may not have to serve the entirety of her 10-year sentence if she agrees to attend a drug rehabilitation program.
