YouVersion, the company that makes a popular Bible app for smart devices, reports record engagement with the app in 2020, including soaring numbers of searches, chapters read and listened to, and devotional plan days completed.
Globally, app users read 43.6 billion Bible chapters in the platform this year, listened to 7.5 billion chapters via the app's audio feature, and completed 1.4 billion days of Bible devotional plans via the app. These are the app's highest levels of engagement since the platform launch in 2013.
Bible searches in the app increased 80% over 2019 to almost 600 million. Some of the most popular searches in 2020 were for "fear," "faith," "peace," "hope," "justice," "healing," and "love."
"These top search terms really show what's been weighing on the hearts and minds of people around the world at key points throughout the year," Bobby Gruenewald, YouVersion founder, said in a statement. "They reveal how people are seeking God as they wrestle with the difficult circumstances they've faced in 2020, and that's something we can celebrate."
The most popular verse in the app in 2020 has been Isaiah 41:10: "Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand."
This verse was shared, highlighted, and bookmarked more than any other.
Worldwide, Ethiopia saw the highest percentage increase in app engagement this year, at 61% growth.
The company also reports extraordinary growth in it Bible App for Kids, which uses animation, sound effects, and interactive games and stories to teach children the Bible. This year, Bible App for Kids was downloaded to more than 22 million unique devices, bringing the total number of worldwide downloads to more than 60 million, YouVersion reports. The number of Bible stories completed in the app surged 90% over 2019, surpassing 170 million this year alone.
